The school where the new Parkhead Schoolhouse community centre is based lay empty for more than 30 years before work began to convert it into a community hub.
Our Parkhead store's community champion John Flannigan helped Parkhead Housing Association, the main provider of social housing in the area, apply for the grant to renovate its cafe – creating new jobs and enabling the centre to offer cooking classes.
John said: "We see the Foundation as one of the many ways to give something back to our local community who continuously support us. We hope it will make a real difference."
Parkhead Housing Association supports around 5,500 local people, with a total of 1,800 properties. Its chief executive officer James Strang said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have been awarded this donation from Asda Foundation towards our community café plans for the Parkhead Schoolhouse.
“This level of funding will enable us to open a first class and greatly-needed facility for our community.”
